Jordan International Nuclear Co-operations: Strategy to Encourage Nuclear Power Development and Resolve Electricity Sector ChallengesSummaryJordans total electricity consumption was 11,886 GWh in 2009 and expected to increase from 12,415 GWh (Gigawatt hours) in 2010 to 20,745 GWh in 2020 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3% during the forecast period 20102020. The country imports 95% of its power requirements, which accounts for around 13% of the countrys Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as of 2009. The country, in order to cope up with its future power demand, has formulated a strategy to consider nuclear power as a reliable source and in this regard Jordan actively has formed many international nuclear co-operation agreements with various nations globally. To encourage the development of nuclear energy in the country, Jordan has joined up with various countries such as Spain, France, China, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Russia, the UK and Argentina. The initiation of nuclear power in Jordan will decrease the countrys dependency on energy imports. Nuclear expansion plans will be initiated with the construction of the first nuclear power reactor in the country and the government has plans to make it operational by 2015. The country also has imposing challenges in its electricity sector, including rising electricity consumption, the lack of natural energy resources, rising energy prices, dependence on imported fuel and environmental concerns (due to the dependence on fossil fuel for power generation). Relying on nuclear energy for Jordans power requirements will resolve these electricity sector challenges. The lack of natural resources such as oil, coal and natural gas are forcing the country to depend on fuel imports from various countries. Jordan imports oil from Saudi Arabia and natural gas from Egypt. Jordan has abundant uranium resources and with the operation of nuclear power reactors, nuclear power will increase in the energy mix and will help the country to decrease its dependence on fuel imports.
